Decriminalize suicide – some Ghanaians to Government.

Some Ghanaians are advocating for the criminal code involving suicide to be decriminalized. According to them, suicide has been a significant global public challenge resulting to many people ending their lives through pesticide self-poisoning, hanging and use of firearms yet there is no suicide case that a Police report has proven the reason why a person committed the act when dead but only prove it when caught in the act attempting it.

However, this does not prevent individuals from committing suicide. Just this month another suicide case was recorded at Eastern Region where a 25-year-old man, Kwesi Antwi has allegedly committed suicide by hanging on a coconut tree of about 15 feet tall at Akyem Aperade Bonkagyeesu, a farming community in the Achiase District in the Eastern Region.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the body of the deceased was retrieved and deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

They further stated that, instead of government providing counseling and support for the surviving victims, the government by the criminal code end up arresting and prosecuting this people which end up frustrating their lives more, a reason why they are advocating for decriminalization of suicide.

They also show disagreement with government criminalizing suicide which end up adding more hardship to the lives of those who attempted doing suicide.
